Seminars

3 workshop-seminars

A series of three workshop-seminars will be arranged during the project period to examine in greater detail aspects of the project theme. One of these events will take place at KHiB, one at KHiO and one at Griegakademiet.

Each event will involve participants from all three institutions as well as invited specialist guests. Each seminar will combine critical discussion of the ongoing artistic projects with academic and theoretical presentations that provide a broader intellectual backdrop to the project.

It will be important that the workshop-seminars are of a concentrated nature enabling a high level of discussion. They will therefore be limited in scale and available only to participants who have a genuine interest in and contribution to make to the discourse around the project. Academic colleagues, research fellows and master students not formally attached to the project can be invited to participate according to relevance.

Seminar 1: Place – Re:place

Bergen Academy of Arts and Design (KHiB)
11-13 October 2012

Kickoff seminar for the project. Participants present current projects and research interests, invited presentations by Bill Rankin, Inger Lise Hansen and Clement Valla, and excursion to Odda to visit the Odds exhibition.

Seminar 2 – Place in sound and music

Grieg Academy, Institute of Music, University of Bergen
2-3 May 2013

The second Re:place seminar examines how issues of place are being negotiated in contemporary sound and music, and questions how this resembles or differs from the dealing with place in fine arts. Participants in the Re:place project will also use the workshop for further planning of the upcoming exhibition at KinoKino and Sandnes kunstforening, and discussions on how to proceed on the issue of critical reflection within the project.

Seminar 3 – Re:placing the cinematic

Atelier Nord ANX, Olaf Ryes pl. 2, Oslo.
31.10. 2013

One-day conference and performance event

No longer bound to celluloid, film projector and the single-screen of the auditorium, cinema of today can be found everywhere—from digital devices and home theaters to architectural structures and geographical sites. Re:Placing the Cinematic looks at the novel possibilities for exploration of physical and virtual spaces this contemporary scenario opens up for. As demonstrated in recent art practices, cinematic constructions of space and place are currently reconfigured through practices such as live video, "mapping" techniques, site-specificity, and employment of 3D-effects. Bringing together scholars from the fields of art history, film history and media studies, the conference aims to historically, theoretically and conceptually place such recent tendencies within the larger trajectory of expanded cinema originated in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as earlier avant-garde and related practices. The conference is organized as part of the artistic research project “Re:place,” funded by the Norwegian National Artistic Research program, in collaboration with Atelier Nord, Academy of Fine Art, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, and IFIKK Dept. of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo.

Speakers: Arie Altena (Sonic Acts, V2_), Ina Blom (University of Oslo), Noam Elcott (Columbia University), Tom Gunning (University of Chicago), and Susanne Ø. Sæther (University of Oslo).

Evening program include performances by Greg Pope & Jon Wesseltoft (UK/NO) and Otolab (IT).

THE CONFERENCE IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL INTERESTED, BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by October 18: http://ateliernord.no/conference-registration/
